It pains me to write this, but a number of humans I’ve spoken with don’t realize that you can get free HDTV signals over the air (did I mention it’s both high-definition and it’s free?). When I tell people that I’m getting free over the air HD content I’m often asked, “oh, so you have satellite?” *facepalm*
Here’s how this works:
- Visit AntennaWeb to find out what stations you can pick up in your area and what type of antenna to buy
- If you’ve got an old TV, buy a converter box
- Buy an antenna: start with a cheapie $10 indoor antenna before splurging on the big $70 outdoor antennas
- Attach antenna to TV. If you’re having trouble getting reception, try moving your antenna into the attic or sticking it out the window (temporarily)
- If you’re not getting any signal, try either a bigger antenna or try ClearQAM. ClearQAM is an unencrypted HD cable signal that your local cable provider (Charter in our area) uses to rebroadcast free over-the-air HD content on your cable feed. Even if you don’t have a cable TV package, try hooking a cable up to your TV and see what you get. You may be surprised!
Some helpful hints: trees, walls, or other buildings can cause problems with your reception. Try to get your antenna up as high as you can. Some old 1950s style antennas work great still if you’ve got one handy.
And yes, this is “real” HD content. Unfortunately, in the US we’re limited to 1080i but it still looks really sharp on your big screen.
